Look at the ratio of members to guests. You would think they are staying anonymous for a reason, eh?
In total there are 22 Active Users online, 18 Guest(s) and 4 Member(s) Member(s) online: Steamy, Dennis Conner, doug, Celestialcarpet |

LOL. I don't think so. My guess is that they are posters and readers from the ICS and CCS boards coming over to have a look at what is being said here.It is more interesting than what passes for entertainment on those other 2 boards most of the time. The proof of that is to look at that post you put up a few days ago Chuck. It has had more views in the last 10 days than anything else put up recently. That means it is what most of these people are coming to this site to read.

Most users of online forums I've been on choose handles other than their real names. Some people don't like the idea of being accessible to the general public, so they prefer to remain more-or-less anonymous for their own privacy and/or safety. I just think of it as a convention of online forums--you choose a name for yourself. In the case of this forum, I only used my real name because 1) my usual handles wouldn't have much currency on these forums, 2) I really didn't feel like making up a new carpet-centric name, and 3) my real name is common and neutral--I didn't want my handle to make an impression either way.
I've never cared what handles people use. This is the only forum I've ever been on where the issue has come up at all, let alone repeatedly. Most of us have local businesses, so international credibility isn't an issue for us. For people coming to this site looking for customers, I can see it's a different story. I have never come to this site looking for customers. I come here to have some fun and to help some people when I can. I have got a few sales from people here anyways, but I take that as something that goes with the territory. The readership here is too small to make it the primary reason for posting here.

Ken has asked a valid question.
With all boards of this type, if open to guest viewing there will be many who have no intention of active participation, so do not bother to register. On 'closed' boards where registration is a prerequisite to viewing, what tends to happen is that the majority of registrants simply 'lurk' in the background. |

Good points John. And of course,even on the closed boards, the lurkers are not identified anymore than they are on the open ones are when it comes to viewing . I have come to believe that only 10-20% of the readers of a board will post, and the rest are content to see what others think. The silent majority you might say.

(Ken said:)...."I have come to believe that only 10-20% of the readers of a board will post..."
______________________________________________________________
I have also concluded that : "There are Givers; and there are Takers" And the Takers always out-weigh the Givers. This is true in most every aspect in life as well as in business.
And, it is very unfortunate because it helps to slow down the sharing of great advice and innovation by others.
But, that is the real world and I doubt any of us will ever change it.
Because of this, I firmly believe that---most---who participate on these boards are "Leaders" in their respective profession (always giving and helping others), rather than the followers who only live off the sweat of those few (10-20%)
Just an opinion from one experienced Old Man.
Good Fortune to all;
Ed Valentine
