Hi everyone! I am new around here. I recently invested in a commercial grade carpet shampooer similar to Rug Doctor. My goal is to keep my business strictly to area rugs which will be cleaned at my house.

My questions are, how realistic is running a rug cleaning business within your home? Will I make good enough money? How much should I charge? And is it a downfall that I am restricting myself to synthetic area rugs and not persian? I do not have the equipment or space to clean handmade oriental or persian rugs.

Thanks very much for your help. I am very excited to be a part of this forum and gain expertise from the pros while sharing my journey with you guys in the long run.

Squeeky;

Funny, I just posted a thread in regards to this very same subject. here is a copy:

Working out of your house has to be a problem for some. The reason for this may be because we may have a tendency to remain in "our comfort zone" and perhaps even become comfortable &/or even lazy (couch; TV; Frig; etc...) rather than changing ones' environment into a "business mode".

But, can working at home be successful? I think it can ;however, one has to have a special trait and be very disciplined. Of course, having a designated office area; shut the door behind, and get busy. And, mentally separate oneself from private life and into a business mentality.

What do you think? What are the Pros and Cons as you see it?

Best to all;
Ed Valentine

and you must have the support of a loving family that understands you are working your business for 8-14 hours per day.  You are not at home for their whim and pleasure, to run their errands, start dinner, wash a car, vacuum, etc.

Either you are prepared to ditch the family or the business.  There is no right decision.  You are in this business for you.  Well, actually for your clients, then you.

I personally think you can do both I don't think you have to work 8 hours you can work for hours just don't over do it yourself I think you'll be fine working from home with the portable machine not sure how good it will get it clean but can always upgrade to a newer machine once you make more money
