Ken,
You are about right with the proportions. Another way of viewing lurkers is as those who only take without giving in return. Speaking as one who has posted advice on aspects of carpet and upholstery cleaning many thousands of times, is that if it helps to raise the standards in out great industry, then fine - my efforts are not in vein. I browsed before signing on as a member. I like to see what others have to say about topics. I will try to chime in if I have anything worth saying. LOL

(Ken said:)...."I have come to believe that only 10-20% of the readers of a board will post..."
______________________________________________________________
I have also concluded that : "There are Givers; and there are Takers" And the Takers always out-weigh the Givers. This is true in most every aspect in life as well as in business.
And, it is very unfortunate because it helps to slow down the sharing of great advice and innovation by others.
But, that is the real world and I doubt any of us will ever change it.
Because of this, I firmly believe that---most---who participate on these boards are "Leaders" in their respective profession (always giving and helping others), rather than the followers who only live off the sweat of those few (10-20%)
Just an opinion from one experienced Old Man.
Good Fortune to all;

Good points John. And of course,even on the closed boards, the lurkers are not identified anymore than they are on the open ones are when it comes to viewing . I have come to believe that only 10-20% of the readers of a board will post, and the rest are content to see what others think. The silent majority you might say.

Ken has asked a valid question.
With all boards of this type, if open to guest viewing there will be many who have no intention of active participation, so do not bother to register. On 'closed' boards where registration is a prerequisite to viewing, what tends to happen is that the majority of registrants simply 'lurk' in the background. |
