That's pretty standard for our line of work, it's rare to find someone that will stay once they see how  much money can be made with a machine themself.   they either jump ship to another who pays a little more, or pick up a used machine and start their own business.

rather than pushing how you do it and for home much you do it, go to the prospect's home or office and avoid giving an estimate or a quote.  You are there to do an inspection and one you have determined what needs to be done, tell them how much.  If they bawk at the price, ask them what areas do they want excluded?  Only the traffic areas with no movement of furniture?  Do not cut per square foot prices, just cut down the size of the job.  Protectant is sold at the job site by taking away worries of a clean carpet gone bad with a 1 year warranty of areas cleaned and treated.  Sell is when doing the job.  We already had one fight over the cost of restoration.
Are you in a high paying business or are you just a self employed low paid grunt who thinks this business provides dignity?

You mean sell it as an add-on at the time the services are being rendered?

The great price vs. value struggle with the customer is a factor they often get stuck on. People are getting smarter when it comes to carpet cleaning now. They almost cringe at the thought of calling a carpet cleaning coupon company that claims they will clean the whole house for $ 29.99... And even worse who is going to be this low life they will send out to work in my home? People are starting to understand you get what you pay for.

If you advertise price and get price shoppers, at least you know what you are getting and what their hot button is.  Not quality, price. Easy to please.  They will not be repeat customers so keep that in mind when you think you should restore rather than clean.  Take the money, never look back.  These people will not send you business, they will not cost you business either.  They might call again if they can remember your name and number in 10 years when they expect same service, same price.

What you need to do is sit down and figure out your expenses (cost of doing business) and try and figure out what you need an hour or a sq. ft. to make a decent profit. Secondly you want to distance yourself from those type of companies you can never undercut them. I still call them bait & switch but others say not. another thing they are high volume companies where as you are trying to find your nitch?

I don't have any prices on my website (http://www.akronsbestcarpetcleaning.com).  Just kind of list that I do specials.  I'd rather have someone call me then just glance on my website and move to the next one.  I may miss out on some sales I guess from people that don't want to call, but then again they probably wouldn't have called if I had prices on my website anyways!
