Dilution and
Coverage
In
cold weather, material may be subject to freezing
temperatures. Freezing does not harm material. If freezing
has occurred or is suspected, warm material to 10°C (50°F)
and shake or stir well before first use. If material is
subject to freezing temperatures between uses it is
necessary to warm and mix material as noted above.
1. When applying Scotchguard
Carpet Protector to new or clean carpet:
- Mix 1 litre of concentrate with 4
litres of warm water (one part concentrate/4 parts
water).
Commercial grade carpet:
- Use 1 litre of diluted treatment
per 5 sq. metres (53 sq. feet) of carpet.
Plush carpet:
- Use 1 litre of diluted treatment
per 2.5 sq. metres (26 sq. feet) of carpet.
2. To insure proper coverage,
measure an area of carpet that will give the desired
coverage when the entire contents of the sprayer are used
up.
Add 1 litre of diluted Scotchguard Carpet Protector to the
tank for each 5 sq. metres (53 sq. feet).
3. Use diluted concentrate within 3-5 days after mixing.
4. Use on colour fast carpet only. Always spray a small
inconspicuous area of carpet, blot with white cloth and
check for colour transfer before using. If colour transfer
occurs, the carpet is not colour fast and the treatment
should not be used.
Instructions for
Use
A. New Carpet
1. No cleaning is necessary unless the carpeted area
has been opened to traffic and shows visible soiling.
2. If visible soiling has occurred the following
procedures are recommended:
- Vacuum carpet thoroughly.
- Remove spots
- Clean larger soiled areas such as
traffic lanes using an extractor. If heavily soiled,
traffic lanes may need shampooing with a Rotary Machine
prior to extraction to remove all soil.
3. Dilute the Scotchguard
Carpet Protector with warm water as indicated in the
Dilution and Coverage section.
4. To insure proper coverage measure the area to be
treated. Be sure to use up entire contents of sprayer within
the pre-measured area.
5. Hold spray nozzle 12" from the carpet and spray
the carpet using straight even overlapping strokes (overlap
1/2 the width of the spray pattern).
Note: See Methods of Application
section for sprayer equipment recommendations and use
instructions.
a. For most commercial style
carpets this even, overlapping spray pattern is sufficient.
These carpets include:
- loop pile carpet:
pile height: 5/16" or less
pile weight: 22-36 oz./sq/ yd.
- short nap plush:
pile height: 3/8" or less
pile weight: 22-36 oz./sq. yd.
b. For open shag construction:
- spray the carpet.
- use a shag rake to rake the pile
immediately after spraying.
c. For dense deep pile carpet,
the Scotchguard Carpet Protector should be scrubbed in
immediately after spraying to obtain deeper pile
penetration. Use a rotary machine with carpet brush or a dry
foam machine (do not use a shampoo or any other chemical
with the machine).
Dense pile carpets are those with:
pile height: 5/6"
or more
pile weight: 36.2/sq.
yd. or more
6. The carpet should dry in
6-12 hours.
Maximum soil and stain protection
develops in 3-4 days.
B. Soiled Carpet
1. Vacuum carpet thoroughly.
2. Remove severe spots and stains with favorite spotter.
3. Extract carpet to remove all soil. Traffic lanes and
other heavily soiled areas may need shampooing with a rotary
machine prior to extraction to remove all soil.
4. The Scotchguard Carpet Protector may be appllied
before the carpet is dry. Care must be taken to evaluate
potential shrinkage problems due to over-wetting. If
shrinkage is a potential problem, either wait until the
carpet dries before applying treatment or follow this test
for wetness:
- After cleaning, place one layer of
paper toweling on the carpet and press firmly with your
hand. If moisture from the carpet soaks through the
towel, wait before applying treatment. If moisture does
not soak through the towel, the carpet treatment may be
applied.
5. Mix one part treatment with
4 parts warm water, 1 litre of concentrate to 4 litres of
warm water. Spray the diluted treatment at a rate of 2
litres per 10 sq. metres of carpet.
6. To insure proper coverage, measure off area to be
treated. Be sure to use up entire contents of sprayer within
the premeasured area.
7. Hold spray nozzle 12 inches from the carpet and spray
the carpet using straight even overlapping strokes. (Overlap
1/2 the width of the spray pattern).
Note:
See Methods of Application section for
sprayer equipment recommendations and use instructions.
8. The carpet should dry in
6-12 hours. Maximum soil and stain protection develops in 3
to 4 days.
Important
Notes to Proper Carpet Preparation
1. Rotary shampooing prior to extraction insures the
highest level of cleanliness possible prior to extraction
should be done when traffic lane soil or other heavy soil
cannot be removed by extraction alone.
2. The extraction process is complete when no visible
soil remains in the carpet, and the extracted water is clean
and free of foam. This is particularly important for carpets
that have been shampooed frequently and have a heavy
detergent build up.
Methods of
Application
When using any of the following pieces of equipment be
sure to pre-measure the area of carpet to be treated and use
all diluted treatment within two hours of mixing.
The following pieces of equipment are recommended for
applying Scotchguard Carpet Protector
3M Carpet Protector Spray Applicator

Directions
for Use:
1. Pre-measure area to be treated and dilute Scotchguard
Carpet Protector
2. Add diluted Carpet Protector to spray tank.
3. Close filling port and pressurize tank to 50 psi.
4. Hold the spray nozzle 12 inches from the carpet and
spray the measured area using straight, even overlapping
strokes. Overlap 1/2 the spray pattern width on each pass.
5. Repressurize the spray tank to 50 psi when the
pressure drops to 30 psi.
6. Continue spraying measured area until the sprayer is
empty (until proper coverage is achieved).
7. Carefully release pressure from the sprayer tank.
8. Rinse out sprayer and spray wand with water when the
job is finished.
Maintenance
of Treated Carpet
1. Vacuum Carpet Frequently and Thoroughly
This is the key to a good maintenance program. Vacuuming
each day is the best way to remove walked on soil and
prevent it from being ground into the carpet and carpet
fiber.
2. Remove Spots and Spills Daily as They Occur
Blot wet spots with absorbent cloth or tissue. Rinse with
water and blot dry. Use 3M Carpet Spot Remover and
Upholstery Cleaner or 3M Heavy Duty Carpet Stain Remover as
needed.
3. Cleaning Treated Carpets
When the carpet does become soiled, maintain by extraction.
4. Re-Application of Scotchguard Carpet Protector
When the carpet is no longer water and oil repellent,
re-application is necessary. When re-applying treatment,
only 1/2 of the original amount or treatment is necessary to
replace the surface coating that may have been worn away
from traffic and scrubbing. Follow these directions when
re-applying treatment:
Preparation
of Carpet
Extract to remove all soil. The treatment may be reapplied
immediately after cleaning or when the carpet is dry.
Dilution and
Coverage
1. Mix 1 litre of concentrate with 4 litres of warm
water (one part concentrate/4 parts water).
2. Use 1 litre of diluted treatment per 10 sq. metres
(108 sq. ft.) of commercial grade carpet, and 2 litres of
diluted treatment per 10 sq. metres (108 sq. ft.) of plush
carpet.
Performance
Monitoring
The performance of the Scotchguard Carpet Protector is
dependent on the application that you provide.
If the fluoro-chemical is diluted and the solution is
sprayed on carpet as directed, the properties of Scotchguard
Carpet Protector will provide excellent benefits to your
customers.
If you skip an area or do not apply the Scotchguard Carpet
Protector solution as suggested, the customer may experience
uneven soiling, "striping" and you run the risk of
having general dissatisfaction. It's up to you to
conscientiously follow the instructions for applying
Scotchguard. |
