I useta charge $2 per step. Then I raised the prices cause its a pain to do and its more time consuming. I do hear complaints from custies once in a Blue moon...But they get over it.

You guys are all full of $hit?? This is starting to sound like the Red Bored?? You can only charge what the market will bear?? and your market area dictates that. When will some quit bragging about their rates when different area of the world get different prices for the same work??

Just My opinion

Really, $45 for stairs is not all that much. I think you feel like youre "ripping" someone off is because youre not use to chargin those prices.  I was kinda scared at first to raise my prices. But I was told by people on the other boards to try it anyways and if it doesnt work...then I can always lower back my prices....IM GLAD I LISTENED!!Big smile

Ill make a bet with ANYONE here... No matter where you are....I bet I can find a cleaner in your area that charges around my price and not having any problems staying busy either.

Doug, I do have a stairtool..But its still a pain in the ass to do stairs and it still takes more time.

And BTW, No one here is braggin about anything. Im just tryin to help the dude make more money like others have helped me.

Sometimes it takes me 20-30 minutes to do a flight
I try to make $ 85.00 per machine hour.
If a flight of twelve takes me 30 minutes to do properly I should be charging 42.50( 1/2 hour) for the 12 steps or 3.54 cents per step. to meet my goal.

I'm at 2.00 . ( $ 48.00@ hr. ) I need to raise my prices on steps. Very seldom will a customer not have their steps cleaned if you did a great job on the adjoining room . IMO

Thanks to all for the input.  Ninja-wand you're right steps are a pain in the ass.  I've been charging 2.50 to 3.00 a step (includes stain guard) depending on how much time is involved.  I'd still rather not have to even get the stair tool out of the van.

maybe just people willing to pay the price? You are right about one thing Goderich is sucker's haven. the only down side is you have to be from out of town. Every week someone else is in the paper for being ripped off, drive ways. roofers and SEARS? Just to mention a few, by SEARS I mean more the Duct Cleaners more than the carpet cleaners.
