After reading the mould thread I thought 'd share with you my horror story.
My company was recently given notice that we had to get out of the water damage business or they would cancel my insurance.
If my insurance was cancelled I'd lose my business so I had to comply.
I had always listed water damage as a source of income to the insurance, too bad they said.
I am a qualified Master Water restorer and approved instructor for water damage, too bad they said.
I have an infrared camera and take pictures along with moisture readings to prove the job is dry, too bad.
I have separate mould insurance, too bad.
The insurance company is just no longer willing to be named on a water damage claim, the litigation costs are just too high they say. Even if I have separate insurance from Elliots for water and mould!!!
If there is someone spraying anything on mould out there, they don't know what they are doing, plain and simple.Most mould spores are hydrophobic so the last thing you want to do is release the spores with air or water mixture.
So when you state that someone sprays Microban on mould, you are just describing a scammer, not a real mould remediator.
Same thing for the people who do water damage without the proper equipment and don't know how to do moisture readings of materials and air mixtures. You know, the guys who cause major mould situations.
These are the guys who are going to cost you $15K more a year like they just did to me.
Bastards!!!!

$15K more?? How the hell much were you paying in the first place. I believe you policy is also based on volume? I guess you must be doing alright then? ------------- Just My opinion |

15K a year is nothing for flood and mould damage the money is amazing. I know guys that pull that from a flood job in a day.
Mould removal will just be classified as something else, there are a lot of ways to skin a cat, the dishonest will get around that no problem. They'll just classify it as damage clean up. ------------- www.mr-steamer.com |

Lee most big restoration comapnies don't give a rats behind about all your magical toys. Most are R&R specialiist? tehy have maybe on certified tech. Oh by the way are all you techs certified in all the areas you advertise? ------------- Just My opinion |

what about all the smaller residential claims....The ones that are done before the insurance company is notified..

As some may know, we do quite a bit of subcontract WDR work for a national WDR franchise. Been working on a real PITA job for 7 days. Place was wet for 3-4 weeks we're guessing. Bound water almost everywhere. Adjuster shows up (finally) and says he won't pay to remove basement ceiling which is soaking wet and we need it out so we can heat the subfloor of the first floor. All of a sudden, they won't pay to pull carpet and pad in 3 bedrooms that we were told over the phone by the franchise were authorized. Estimator for franchise says pull equipment and say it's dry. Oh yeah, and only bill for 6 days! I told him, that I cannot claim that it is dry and that he can change any paperwork I give him but the originals (which I keep) will always say that it was wet. He says OK. So, now I just have to see how much of this check gets whittled away between the insurance company and the franchise. I feel like there is little hope for the WDR industry sometimes. | I was in the Insurance Restoration business for 15 years, working for some of the largest resoration contractors in Western Canada. This has ALWAYS been the problem. It's the main reason I have decided to stay away from restoration work in my own business. Sometimes it's tempting to get in, cause we all know the money can be REALLY good at times. Unless you're one of the big players and have acces to the claims managers and VP's of claims...you can never win. |

Just have them sign a release. I did that once on a job that wasn't dry. The adjuster called and told me to leave my equipment til it was dry -------------

I won't participate in the wining and dining bs. My calls come from homeowners not adjusters. I'm not a preferred. I look out for the policy holder and I don't give a rat's ass about the insurance company as long as the job gets done right -------------

I had an adjuster went as far as asking if the company I was working for was ISO 9001 cert..... Just to get rid of us....LOL..

Same here, it`s happened before that the insurance co. tries to deny my service, even though the policy holder has requested our service, but under the Insurance Bureau of Canada legislation, it clearly states that the insured has the right to use their own contractor as long as they submitt an estimate that is comparible to that of the competition. S***e F*** is one of the toughest to deal with in this regard. ------------- It`s not how far you fall...it`s how high you bounce back up... |
