You should not have to cut anywhere.  I doubt that the stairs were put in all in one length.  You should go to the bottom take vise scripst or needle nose pliers and disengage the carpet or start at the top. Rotova:  First of all there should be no nails on the steps if it was installed properly on the tack strip if it is over pad.  I have carpeted stairs and the annoying problem that i am having is the nails coming up  and having to step on the when going up the stairs so and having to keep my rubber mallet handy. Any suggestions anyone?
