He will still get heat, but some of the fresh water will escape into the van's cooling system and dilute the coolant until it eventually becomes all water

Correct. It's called a heat exchanger. One of the coils has a hole in it.

Since you don't seem to understand how your system works, you should bring it to a repair shop to have it fixed.

Your heat exchager has a hole in it. The fresh water is entering your van's cooling system and causing it to overflow.
