Not even there. They measure it at the blower most of the time. Then it suffers line loss going thru the waste tank, thru at least 100 ft of hose and then the wand, then the carpet. What I would like to do is compare the cfm on my equipment to what is advertised by those who manufacture and/or sell equipment.  I know that other things come into play (like the mix of cfm & lift, heat, etc.)  I just want to make sure I'm comparing apples to apples with regard to cfm.
 
I assume that manufacturers measure cfm without a wand to get the highest reading.  If that is true, I will use the anemometer at the vacuum intake, or where is the best comparison?

The best equipment is never inexpensive. That said it is possible to buy anemometers for as little as a couple of hundred dollars. The better ones cost over $1000. Whichever type you get, you want one that can tollerate water as well as dry airflow so you can measure flow at actual use conditions, when the wand is on the carpet while you are cleaning.
