IICRC Training classes will provide a good foundation for you to build upon I think.  There you can learn about the principles of stain removal and how the different fibers used in carpet manufacturing do differ.  While I am not impressed by the certifications they bestow, getting that education may prove to be a great starting point for you.

It gives you more confidence when they offer samples to try IMO. When i started out every supplier i met had the best detergents on the market. All i ended up with is a garage full of unused 5 gal containers of crap that was useless.
But back then we also didnt have these boards to discuss things in real time.
