If a carpet cleaning issue does go to court its the IICRC S100 that the judge will recognize as the Standard of Care for the industry.

like i said screw the IICRC  I let my IICRC certified firm statusexpire because I don't believe it does anything for me these days, asfar as getting, or keeping business. if you tell a customer your IICRC certified you get a blank stare they never heard of them and don't seem to care, don't need them to start your business, get business, or keep business
cleaning carpets is not rocket science and with all the info on the net these days and all the different forums such as this one, which are all free, and lets not forget about interlink supply, adco, or any of the supply places whom are all very willing to help out newbies or anyone for that matter for free as well, one can get answers to any questions they can dream of and practice on their own home carpets and those of friends and family before even going and and doing a real paying customer

IICRC S100 establishes minimum standards for professional on-location cleaning of installed textile floor coverings.  If the customer's attorney presents an expert witness who is IICRC certified and can quote the standard you my friend lose in court.  It's not what you client knows, it is what case law his own lawyer knows that will hang you.  But, if you want to do less than an adequate job, go for it.  The lawyer will add on his percentage to any expenses the client  is liable for if he loses or you are liable for if you lose.  Bottom line, you will be out of a job and if they can find other assets you have, hope to can find another state to move into until the next suit. 

Unless of course you have an industry accepted manual that says spray, extract, collect.  Or maybe extract then collect proving you went out of your way to spray which is an option only.  Would you like to live in a home where the contractor made up his own codes as he went along and nothing was inspected?  The exact same principle applies here.  So far, the government accepts self regulating by the industry but if that doesn't work, you can see where it leads to out of the necessity of protecting the consumer.

screw the IICRC, who do they think they are anyway, i find most customers never even heard of them, they just want their carpets cleaned--and yes i am aware of "CHAT" and its a good BASIC philosophy to follow, all i'm saying is don't be so afraid to think outside the "box" If you follow all the rules and a customer sues you do you really think the IICRC will step in and help you? will they represent you in court for free? will they pay up for you if you loose? Water alone does not restore the pH.  That is the job of a chemical rinse.  If you want a green solution try the Axiom line of products in the states.

In regards to why you take the steps, the IICRC provides an industry accepted guideline:

1.  Dry Soil Removal (vacuum)
2.  Soil Suspension aka CHAT (chemical, heat, agitation, dwell time)
3.  Soil Extraction (this is were the pH is returned to 7.0 in the fibers)
4.  Grooming (restoring pile)
5.  Drying (maximum time is 24 hours)

Brake any of those rules and God help you in a lawsuit should the customer wish to take you to court over whatever he wants to blame you for regarding you and his carpet.  Any IICRC instructor worth his or her weight in gold will tell you that.

Cardinal rule - don't bend or brake the rules.

Rotovac are mechanical engineers, not chemists.  Don't ask them how to properly clean carpet.  The power wands they make are great in my opinion, but they are part of what makes up your cleaning arsenal and not the be all to end all.

How about pre-spraying with Procyon Plus and rinsing with straight water?  Neutral pH and works on moderately dirty carpet.
