Good answer Ted, you got me. But then again I'm lazy, unprofessional, I like to wash and dash and grab the cash on my way out the door. But that's just me. All of you other cleaners out there listen to Ted, experience & knowledge counts sometimes.

Nightrider says stay away from Indian rugs and wool. These are the carpets you can charge $2.00 to $5.00 per sq/ft.

As long as you purchase the appropriate products and take a few hours in a course to learn the ups and downs on cleaning them.

The uneducated Tide guys are charging 15cents per sq/ft. and wondering why they cannot afford to eat.



These are the symbols the wool/rug people want to see and have assurance that you will not damage the carpet as the non-school, non-educated guy did the last time.

Stay away from Wool and Indian Rugs/ Carpets. The rest is like washing clothes. Not much can happen on 99% of floor covering out there. IT"S NOT MAGIC. I can tell you what detergent to use to save a lot of money instead of getting CLEANED OUT by commercial detergents out there.....but I will have the whole board sending me NASTY COMMENTS. BUT...BUT...BUT   if you beg me to, say please often, and suck up to me.....Maybe I will let you in on a secret that will save you thousands of dollars .

"If it were me"....I would keep looking around because there are machines out there which have ---4--wheels  (oh, no, that must mean that they are a "portable!"--LOL!) and will blast through dirt and grim unbelievably as well as a TM would.
 
I know because I have experienced it for 40 years now.

If you are in Canada I can help you with good used truckmounts. But, should be no problem starting out and growing with a good 500 psi portable.

Suggest you call the IICRC and see whether the closest school is a go. There you will get all of the info and literature you need.

I am currently working on a business plan to step into the carpet cleaning business. After reading alot of posts, I need the insight of members as to all that I will need to be successful in this trade. I will not be doing this part time, Im looking career, this will have 110% of my time and effort.
 
I have read alot about working for a carpet cleaning company or take a class, but in my area that is not possible. Is there any resources that I can buy to help me learn what I need to know about this business ? DVD, book ect.. I do not want to just get equipment and consider myself a carpet cleaner, I want to provide an excellent service and experience for my customers. I will be doing strictly residential for now. I read truckmounts is way to go, where can I find a good deal on one as I do not have 30 to 50k to spend.
