I'm trying to clean some 5 year old nylon carpeting. Never been vacuumed or cleaned, has soil and tobacco on the pad, underneath. (Fine cut tobacco stomped through to the pad.) Using Rug Doctor, rug doc cleaners, oxy based spray, and Oxy Clean. Tried all combinations, and the carpet comes clean on top, but wicks up every time. A little lighter each time, but I don't want to keep this cleaner for 2 weeks.... Tried running over it quickly so not much water goes down, in an attempt to prevent wicking, but it always wicks a little, again and again. Also tried soaking the carpet with Oxy Clean, hoping it would neutralise whatever dirt was under the carpet. Still wicks.

First of all...........the machine your using is not powerful enough to suck up all the water you are putting down.......thus wicking will occur........as for the chemicals you are using........better use a fiber rinse to neutralize. If it was possible for you to rent an OP machine it would sure help........but there's not much chance at that. If you are a home owner.......suggest you get the big guns in to solve your problem. I've also run over it with clean water a couple times in a row to make sure all the chem is out of the carpet. Stopped using R Doctor soap after the first few cleanings, and have been using Oxy Clean since, with some traffic spray once in a while.
This carpet has to come clean. I'll pull it up and clean underneath if I have to. |

Can you recommend a product? I'll ask at the Home Depot, as I'm on my way there now.
What's an OP machine, please? |

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The carpet comes clean on every pass. The problem is wicking. The exception would be the tobacco stained area in one room. It is somewhat darker than the rest of the carpet. Any specific recommendations for the tobacco stain? |

Regent Best to go to a local carpet cleaning store for a rinse.........I am not sure if Home Depot would carry such a product..........My question to you is.........is it that impossible to get outside help for this problem? |

I guess I'll have to get an estimate..... Thing that ticks me off is that I've had this RD for over a week, spent a lot of money already, and now I'll have to make a truck payment for a cleaning contractor anyway. ![]() |

Regent: Don't waste anymore time and money on this. A tm will not clean below the carpet either. If it is that bad underneath and the carpet is still salavageable dissengage the carpet remove and replace the pad do a good cleanup before reinstallation and you will be good to go. Regardless you must consider what the entire job is worth. If you are over 60 to 70% in restoration costs REPLACE IT!.
