Hello!!

WHERE IM FROM:
My name is Marcos Rivera.  I am 23 and graduated from UNM in december 08, with a degree in financial management and spanish.  My plans for the navy and corporate life fell thru.  Thank God!!!  Because i discovered carpet cleaning!!!

MY brother has cleaned carpets for the past 15 years.  He has a small porty, i teamed with him because i liked the hours and i liked the $$.  Plus, when you see the nasty water that comes out, you really know that you are providing a NECESSARY service and it is easy to believe in your service.

He has never researached, advertised, or marketed anything.  Now that im a part of the team, its a different story.  were going straight to the top!!!

WHAT MY PLAN IS:
My brother and i live and operate in santa fe, NM.  We only have 1 machine.  I am saving all of my money to buy a new truck (as the one i have is pretty old and ugly) so when i drive up to customers houses i arrive in a presentable manner.  I am also saving for a HIGH POWERED portable for myself (only until i can make enough money to buy a quality TM).

Im going to move to albuquerque and expand there.  I am using john braun (the hitman) to do my website and my online advertising.  The 2nd half of my marketing plan is to do 6,000 door hangers a month in high end neighborhoods.  Between the two i figure i'll be doing about $4,000 worth of business a month.   .....along with my referral plan which rewards current clients with discounts on their next visit.

I plan on being certified by IICRC as soon as i can afford it.  With advertising that, and using gold rated equipment by CRI, doing an excellent job, being courteous and providing full service to clients, i anticipate doing very well in the next year.

WHERE IM GOING:
If anyone hasnt heard of the hitman (John Braun), you should definitely look him up.  Go to www.hitmanadvertising.com.  That is where im going.  I am 23 years old, and have the most valuable asset, time.  I will be as big as him someday.  Along with help from people like howard pardtridge of course.  he has some awesome products on turning one truck companies into multi truck companies with warehouses and top quality equipment.

Thank you for reading my rant.  i would appreciate comments and criticisms.  I will post the link to my website soon.  Im just a kid chasing a dream.

Marcos, mark the shark, Rivera

We all have Dreams and Rainbows we want to reach . It doesn't matter if your 23 or 83 , the Dreams might differ, but the desire is still there. Follow your Dreams, but be kind to others during your pursuit...because others can make your dreams a nightmere. Good Luck.....

The dirtier the carpet the more job satisfaction I get.  Even I am amazed at the results sometimes and that makes me feel like I did something good for someone today.

If you were my son I'd suggest you enroll in night school. Just do a class or two per semester and get yourself a degree. Carpet cleaning is okay but at your age I think you can aim higher. That being said, good luck!

Remember men in New York with doctorates chose to work on trash trucks.
Sometimes a degree just proves a person buys the line "a person with a college degree will make $1 million more that a person without a degree over a lifetime" which by the way is word for word exactly what was being said in 1970, 40 years ago.  With inflation that promise sucks.

Actually i've been very busy cleaning carpets so havent had much time to post on this forum...also, i use a different forum

i like it more... AND i had lost my login information for this site and it took me a while to figure it out.

For this month, i have about $2,000 worth of business booked.  Im slowly chipping away, i spent a lot of money to start this business, but its looking good.  Every m onth is getting better, my first month i had 1 job, the next month about 3 or 4, and this month i have 5 booked, and its only the 1st!!!

And college degrees are over rated.  To journeyman, i dont konw what you were trying to say...???  But IMO its not a degree that makes a man, its his ablity to make money.  Its his mindset, its how he thinks... I will never go into Finance i dont li ke wearing a suit, and i dont like making less than $100/hour, like i do cleaning carpets.

And remember, there is a difference between owning a business, and being an owne operator....got carpets to clean.

what exactly do you mean by aim higher?  a suit job? a "financial" job using my degree?  I'd only make about $20/hour, i'd be taxed higher than owning my carpet cleaning business, i'd have to work 8 hours a day, on THEIR schedule not on mine.

College costs have increased by 1000% since 1970.  The value of the degree as stated in the comparison of $1 million which has been badgered about since 1970 (they never change that number of how much more you will make over the guy who didn't give his soul to the college industry) eroded to 17% in buying power.  So, pay 10 times more today, 40 years later, for something worth 17 cents on the dollar and do you need a college education to figure out you were screwed?

The richest kid in our high school who would have graduated with my class if he had not dropped out had a D- average.  He has a large manufacturing plant in San Diego making something he owns the patent.

"A" students teach "B" students how to work for "C" students.

Henry Ford sued for libel and $1 million against the Chicago Tribune.  The paper's lawyers regretted ever getting Ford on the stand.  After a lengthy barrage of questions from the attorney to test Ford's knowledge of basic things like American History, an irritated Ford interrupted the advocate and (forgive the paraphrasing) interjected as follows:

"I believe we can agree that I do not know answers to your basic questions.  Let me tell you how this questioning would go in my office.  You see, I have a row of buttons on my desk.  When I require an answer to any question, I simply push one of those buttons and a man appears who answers that question for me.  You see sir, I don't need to know answers, I simply know how to get the answers.  I hire walking encyclopedia who will never be more than that."

He won the lawsuit and no one implied anything about the intelligence of an 8th grade education titan of industry again.

The only reason I am starting college is the free money.  By the time I graduate I will be retired and that student loan money will not be paid back.  You see, they can't touch social security.  Bottom line, I am in it for the money, not delayed gratification money, but spend it today money.

I'm with you in ABQ

Im not sure what you intended to accomplish with that post...

I'll tell you what i DO agree with and what i DONT necessarily like...

your first paragraph confused me.  i havent done the economic analysis of how much college costs, or what it is worth in dollars, or any of that stuff.  I'll tell you what though, im extremely fortunate i was able to go to University.  I learned 30% in the classroom, and 70% in "life"....living in the dorms, interacting with PHD's, interacting with ppl from entirely different backgrounds, speaking in the classrooms getting critiqued by a million different ppl from a million different places.  which is good, you cant buy that..unless you go to college.

I hate when ppl say they are going to live in an apartment off campus their first year, it makes no sense.  they want to be cool and have their own place and not be disturbed by the 499 other students living in the same building as them (the dorms) which is who you learn the most from!!!  other ppl...

plus, now that i've started my business, my network of peple that i know is HUGE.  i was in a fraternity in college and played lacrosse...AND lived in the dorms for 2 years.  i have 1200 facebook friends, and i know allof them... this has helped my business ALOT!

for your 2nd paragraph, thats awesome.  most millionaire's in this country were not A students, nor do they work for anyone else.  in other words, they are entrepreneurs, and usually, they do something very strange, like manufacture something...something that you wouldnt think is popular.  basic supply and demand, if there is a demand for something that no one wants to produce, the guy who produces it can charge whateverhe wants for it, given the inelastic demand for it.  but you know all of this cuz you've already read "millionaire mind" and "millionaire next door"...

you've also read "think and grow rich" ....thats where the story about Ford came from right?

based on your last paragraph im guessing you were offended by my comment about college being overrated?  I think college is AMAZING.  im so glad i got to do the 4 year college thing, i had such a blast...i had such a blast that i decided to stay an extra semester haha.  it was the best time of my life.  but, my point is this...which you probly already know cuz you already read "rich dad poor dad"....

my point:  college degree's dont actualy guarantee success, like everyone says.  its k ind of sad actually, college graduates have so much pressure on them, everyone expects you go get a suit job in a tall building making tons and tons of money...sad thing is, thats not how it works.  you have to have a personality that is good at getting things done, and attracts success.  a personality that is driven to succeeding no matter what, like ford, and the wright brothers, and rockafeller, and trump...blah blah blah im tired and this post is too long.

and your in ABQ?  Eugene caret cleaning then???
