It couldn't get worse Andy. Just take whatever work you can get and curse the SOB after you leave.

I'm thinking so many carpet cleaners wereput out of business due to the economy and the ones that survived are doing better, because they are getting all the business from the ones that shut down.

I think most that went out of business probably had a lot of payments to make on brand new equipment. They blow their budget on hardware and think business will just appear when they're ready. All those deals on "hardly used" machines paint the picture.

Hi michel
from what i think about carpet cleaners that went out of business, i personly know 2 big companies that used to have 10-20 trucks and a big obligations{money loans} and the reason that they lost their business is mainly because they keep spending money on advertizing and internet, while a smart businessman will take 2 gears down. IMO personally i feel a HUGE prob. in the US (and my guess alot of the world) is a tremendious lack of Exp. (support from others, like here), and more importantly CUSTOMER SERVICE! Nearly every company I have dealt with within the last few years (with a small few exceptions) has had CS that was HORRIBLE! I still am obligated to pay the full prices (rarely discounted) and am stuck with sub-par CS.
For my company, (in a industry with no guarentees) i strive to provide the highest form of customer service i can obtain! I love my line i came up with "Customer Satisfaction/Service comes first, CLEANING CARPETS 2nd!" my clients love it. After all i am really trying to sell my company name, not my equipment. another one i say is "I cannot guarentee ANYTHING free; but I CAN GUARENTEE to be resonable, after all i am a consumer as well" which has diffused some of the hard nosed "mrs. jones" in a heartbeat. Kinda reminding the client that i too am human.
I feel we CC'r have a unique opportunity to really change things in our neighborhoods, simply by remembering that we are being INVITED in to our clients homes/lives, and a certain layer of respect is called for. Its all about the CS IMO, if they dont trust you, GL coming back. ;)

hard to have CS as a employee in a big $$ company, after all why should he care as much as us owners? unless we make it more valuable to our employees (our front line) they have no real benefit or drive to "go the extra mile" which sometimes can save a big $$ Bid

Basic customer service skills put us above a lot of the competition. A lot of work-minded people get into the business because of it's easy start-up, low overhead, etc. They think it's just about going in and getting the job done. This is monkey work. The finesse is in customer relations and business-side stuff.
