Bonnet/Spin Pad Cleaning

Theory

Bonnet cleaning is commonly referred to as a "dry" carpet cleaning system. Although not completely dry, bonnet cleaning is considered a low moisture carpet cleaning system. Bonnet cleaning is accomplished by spraying a detergent/solvent solution over the face of the carpet pile. This can be done with hand pump style sprayers, power sprayers, CO2 pressure tanks or specialized spray systems attached to the floor machine. Immediately after spraying, the carpet is buffed with an absorbent pad attached to the machine. The carpet soil is absorbed into the pad. The pad is changed as it becomes soiled and thoroughly laundered prior to the next job. Best results are obtained when the pads are changed before becoming too wet.

Bonnet/Spin Pad Cleaning

Advantages

  • The bonnet system is a relatively fast system enabling the operator to cover large areas quickly.
  • Bonnet cleaning is relatively fast drying.
  • Minimal operator skill required.
  • Excellent system for maintenance programs when used in conjunction with more thorough periodic soil extraction methods.

Disadvantages

  • Bonnet cleaning is not noted for heavy soil removal.
  • No rinsing action.
  • Does not provide deep cleaning action.
  • Used absorbent pads require laundering between jobs.
  • High/low swirls figure 8 pattern if not pile set after procedure.
  • Caution must be used on cut pile carpet.

Many bonnet cleaning solutions that may clean effectively will leave soil attracting residues. Use a bonnet cleaner with a soil retardant to enhance bonnet cleaning effectiveness. Best results are achieved by using a dry bonnet, and regularly changing the bonnets when soiled.

We could absolutely not explain the Bonnet Cleaning Process without giving PadMan equal time as he claims that his system is far superior.

Here it is in PadMan's Own words...

Quote

Many here obviously have never used or even heard of OP cleaning.

OP is quite a bit different than Rotary Bonnet.

#1. The agitation of OP is much more and higher than rotary.

#2. Depth of cleaning is better because of the orbit of the cotton terri pad moving over the carpet and down into it.

#3. Cotton pads absorb more soil and because cotton terri has so many more contact points to the carpet it cleans better.

#4. While this is not about "which" method is BEST or better, fact is many OLD TIME cleaners as well as relative newbies have gone to OP cleaning and sold, YES sold thier TM's and replaced them with OP machines.

$5. In this day of "instant this and instant that" many people prefer VLM (Very Low Moisture) cleaning because of CUSTOMER EASE, we can clean and be out of the house in little time and the carpets are basically dry when we leave.

#6. Another benefit "to the customer" is the need for LESS cleanings, OP cleaning will cause the carpets to have to be cleaned LESS often.

#7. Our country club here in Lexington, Ky. had been having their carpets cleaned every TWO WEEKS for 14 weeks, simply because the carpets would look bad after that short amount of time. They had gone through 6 of the local cleaners and still could not get the carpets to stay clean. We did the job and then started a 3 MONTH maintenance program, and because the carpets stayed so clean they them moved it to every 4 months. We have been cleaning there now for 7 years or so.

If anyone thinks the previous cleaners were simply fly by nights or that they didn't know what they were doing, I must disagree, one of the cleaning companies was Joey Picketts company. Most of you know who he is.

Here are some OP pictures that I have taken of jobs I have done http://ccsop.com/gallery/album01 this is NOT surface cleaning at all and it you study what the results, you can see that.

BTW, OP is a great pile lifter as well, the orbital actions makes it dig deep.

I call the bonnet system. pretend carpet cleaning. It will only clean the serface. It uses a form of moisture, that will distiort carpet fiber permantely. Try this. Take two large binded area rugs, with a 1/2 in. pad under them. Place them in your garage. Clean one with a buffer, clean the other with a truck mount using a good cleaning agent that will not foam, or effect the vacume on your unit. Prespray only, and rinse with water. Soft water is a plus. after repeated cleanings do your inspection. See wich one has the most dirt in the backing, and resting on top of the pad. also check for fiber distortion. As a final note, do not rambo the carpet with the truck mount. turn your heat, and water pressure down. Let the chemistry do the work, not the brut force of the machine.  ( You be the judge)Wink

It's not as pretend as the CIMEX, in my opinion.

I did bonnet cleaning for quite sometime. I use to choke when I'd have to tell a customer how much better it was than steam cleaning. Still sold the method, still did a great job with it but bojedi is right.. it's "pretend" carpet cleaning (my exact words).

Atlantis,

I hear you, but try O.P. (Oscillating Power) with a pure COTTON pad. There is an exceptional difference. Synthetic bonnets are out if you want it clean.

P.S.
Can you imagine wearing other than cotton underwear? Try wearing a pair of synthetic underwear and you'll have your answer. I am not knocking H.W.E. methods but O.P. and Cotton sure opened my eyes.

Do you guys have any problems with residential customers when you clean their homes using an OP or Bonnet method? Are they skeptical when you bring an OP machine in their home and see that you're just spinning a pad on their carpet as opposed to using a truck mount?

I'm not saying one method works better than the other, I don't know. I'm just concerned that the customers might be quick to judge when using that method.

Nothing breeds prejudice like ignorance.  Educate your customer as to WHY your method is the preferred methods.  In carpet cleaning there is no right or wrong way, just my way or your way.
Bonnet delivers what the customer is really looking for - a clean looking carpet with a minimal drying time.
What may not be good enough for you is good enough for the buying public.  Remember this is a business, not brain surgery.  The customer who expects you to screw him or her is pleasantly surprised at the results.
Bonnet cleaning does little to reactivate the smell of pet urine.  The nose knows, if it smells clean it must be clean.

Just my opinion.  Freely given and worth every penny of what you paid for it.

Are you in a high paying business or are you just a self employed low paid grunt who thinks this business provides dignity?

i HAVE USED THE BONNET METHOD FOR THE PAST FOURTEEN YEARS.  IT DEPENDS ON THE CHEMICAL AND HOW YOU MIX IT.  I WORKED FOR ELITE IN THE EARLY EIGHTIES WHEN THIS METHOD REALLY BECAME POPULAR.  I CAN SEE WHY PEOPLE ARE SCEPTICAL BUT I'VE HAD NO TROUBLE BECAUSE I WORK FOR MYSELF AND KNOW WHAT STRENGTH TO MIX THE CHEMICAL TO GET A GOOD RESULT AND LEAVE VERY LITTLE RESIDUE.  I DONT KNOW WITH THE BIG NAME FRANCHISES.  I'VE SEEN A FEW DISASTERS BUT SEEN SOME GOOD ONES TO.  I AM ABOUT TO PURCHASE A TRUCK MOUNT MYSELF TO GET INTO HARD FLOOR CLEANING AND CAN SEE THE BENEFITS OF BOTH METHODS.  THE MORE YOU HAVE TO OFFER THE CUSTOMER THE LESS TIMES YOU WIL SAY "NO" I DON'T DO THAT AT THE MOMENT, BUT I CAN ARRANGE THAT FOR YOU!!

I offer HWE or Bonnet, some of my customer just have to have it one way or the other. The way I look at it is that it's just another tool in the tool belt.  I can make my recommendation on what I think /know will work better but the person who has the money gets to decide what happens.

If I don't ask and talk to the customer enough before I start cleaning and use the wrong method I always fall back on the good old phrase, "ohh that was just the pre-treatment" and then I bring in the other system.
