Funny story... received a call today from a customer, that says my company clean 1 room for him in April 2005 and now the carpet is falling apart....
He wants me to come out and take a look at it.
he left his name but no number on my answering machine.
would you do anything ???? called back the number on my display but it's out of service....
April is a pretty long time ago...and I don't have any record by the name he left. sounds like bull to me...
in all the years I've been carpet cleaning I have never had this kind of crap happen to me
I guess I'll just wait for his call

Good Post BarwBarn, yes carpet clean is very serious, it comes just before window cleaning and right after having a bowl of Frosted Flakes.
Your machine is just a tool that does nothing more than make noise, you are the carpet cleaner..........perhaps with the other unit you were less motivated to do a good job.............now you are.
I can clean the same carpet with a brush, pail of water( with Tide ) a dry rag & a shop vac, and the result will be the same as a truckmount

General Lee...........just ask your Grand-mother how she cleaned her rugs.......
For the hell of a promotion stunt it I've done that back in the late 80's, as a demo in a shopping center using normal people passing by who volenteered to use a brush, soap & a shop-vac........then another using an ElectroLux Shapooer........a rented grocery store portable.........and my Truckmount ( 1985 Cleanco )
The carpet came clean using all methods, but my demo was aimed for them to call me to do it faster, better ( cause the cleanablity is constant ) no mess, and they can sit and have a cup of coffee while I do all the manual labour.I did not want to try to promote that a truckmount was the best thing since sliced bread I just wanted to show them that I can do it for them using a better& faster method with less effort.
I see you still like to make this carpet cleaning stuff a science General

Anybody who has ever used tide and a bucket knows it turns brown REALLY QUICK.
I have been doing this for a long time 'rider. Its not like I haven't "been there and done that".
If you have been doing it as long as you say I am really shocked that you don't use "the oldest trick in the book". Used to be (in the early '80s) when we got the very dirtiest carpet we just poured pails of hot water on it and sucked it right back out. Nothing did better than that. And it didn't resoil.
And as for my Gram, she beat the rugs on a cloths line.

Your Granny should have beaten you hanging on the clothes line
Never did the pails of hot water trick, too simple of an idea I suppose...........I like the complicated more dramatic approach where I can be the star of the show
Adwa, he would have gotten a condensed version, I would have left out all the 3 letter words, and all vowels.

Sorry.I disagree. Cleaning carpets "right" is a job, talent, science, what-ever................ It is a combination of the right eqipement, the right know -how and the right chemicals. You can adjst any of these factors into the equation and get close to the same results.

Having used truck mounts for the past 15 years (4 diferent units) I can tell you it does make a difference. Propane was the best till now. You have got to have the heat, the vacuum and the right chemicals or you will see the diference, if you care to look. There are guys with portables, guys with truck mounts and there are professionals. Guys who will work to achieve their goal, no matter what equipment they have.

Why do you have to have heat to do a good job..........Take a look at what Padman can do with his method.
I bought a Truckmount in 1985, was cleaning carpets for 1 month beforehand...................I wasn't a professional carpet cleaner...........I'm still not a pro, I know nothing about a carpet, I own a Chinese restaurant, I don't cook............ neither am I Chinese, I like to wear running shoes that doesn't make me an athlete.
Portables, truckmounts, bonnet cleaning, a rag & pail are all tools, it's up to you to make the best of them. How come in auto racing there is only 1 winner, they all have fast cars.........how come only 1 hockey team wins, when they start the game they are all equal.
You're the star of the show Barwbarn..........you make it all happen.........not your machine.

I have cleaned from 120 to 200. 200 makes my job a lot easier. I don't have to work as hard to get the same results. It cuts down my cleaning time. I do a lot of salvage work. A hot machine cleans better, dries faster. Add a pre-treatment and a rinse and they keep calling you back. It is the repeat business that keeps me going. I work 10 to 14 hours a day where other companies are sitting in the shop. Why? because I constantly try to improve. My carpets get cleaner, stay clean and smell good. Sorry. I enjoy what I am doing. I strive to do the best job I can no matter what is envolved, no matter the profit and I sleep good at night. When people call in and request you and you only you know you are doing right. Sorry: no brag, just fact. When a customer calls in and says: send my old man over here....I feel good. Sorry...didn't mean to get serious. Most guys my age have retired. It is not in my future.

Sounds good to me BarwBarn, I don't know how old you are, I'm 52 and if if I was called to always do salvage jobs I would try to sell them new carpeting instead............maybe I'm off track here but that's what I get from your post.
Can you fill us in as to exactly what kind of contracts you get that keeps you working 14 hours /day....Thanks

We have a lot of residential customers. Mostly repeats and referals. We quit advertising about 6 months ago. The cost did not justify the end. We also have several realestate accounts, commercial accounts, restaurants and about 20 apartment complexes. we are a full service co. we deversified several years ago so that we could stay busy. I logged 1500 hours on my macine last year. Just a few more hours and I am going full time. I am 62. I plan on slowing down around 80. I may be in a wheel chair with a wand attached but I will still be cleaning. (The GOOD LORD willing and the creek don't rise). Shoot: if I were to retire I would drop dead within 6 months. I love to eat too much and get bored sitting around Sunday afternoons.

1500 hours is a lot of carpet... I use to log about 400 hours a month... but since I'm not working for the slave drivers any more maybe I'll log that for the year....lol

Keep on Truckin........BarwBarn ( what does barwbarn mean )
Sounds like you really enjoy your work Bar-B, if you were younger I'd make fun of you for taking this stuff as serious as you do...........only because someone in their 20's 30's have an open highway to bigger & better accomplishments in thier life.
Assuming life is based on 100 years at age 50 you're on your way down the mountain taking all you can as a gift from God.
I'd be sucking water out of that creek each day just to be on the safe side, times are rapidly changing in this world.

I've thought a lot about this, Nightrider, because I'm young(ish), and
I was by outward appearances moving onto better things. For me, this
(ad)venture into the realm of business ownership is one helluva
highway. If I just finished my thesis, which I can still do, I could
either teach college as a lecturer, which I did as a grad student
anyway, or I could go onto doctoral study. My plan, and the expectation
of my department, was the latter. Now, although going into business for
myself scares me, and it has nothing to do with my education, I'm very
glad to do it. It's much more interesting to me than what I was doing
in college. I dunno . . . maybe it's just different--maybe I just lost
my momentum and needed a change. Regardless, I don't see this current
project as a turning away. Maybe when I'm in my 50's, I'll look back on
my life and kick myself in the ass everyday. But I actually like this.
So what kind of bigger and better accomplishments are you referring to?
|
Posted By: nightrider
Date Posted: 31/January/2006 at 1:05am
My Bigger & Better accomplishments are like that of a diamond.........there are many facets that make up any and all accomplishments............Carpet cleaning as a one man show is not one of them..............BUT .........on the other hand the discipline, courage, and physical/mental strains of the job says something of your character.
I sincerely believe that anyone who succeeds in this business to generate a decent income has the mind set and business know-how to consider other higher generating monetary gains.
Michael.........just ask yourself where you want to be 5 years from now............set your goal to begin your journey starting in the month of mid March , and never look back. Hang your goals on your wall to see everyday and never get discouraged.

BARWBARN: Barry W, Barnett...short version. I started out my career as an accountant, working on my CPA. It didn't take me long to realize that I could not sit behind a desk the rest of my life. I spent 30 years with the local newspaper. I was doing this in the day time. Parting with the news and doing this full time and 1/2 was not a major change in my life. Grew up on a farm. Kinda hard to shake your roots. I got to be physical to be happy and healthy. Yea, I'm crazy. I love to work. I still got a house full of kids to support. I am blessed. I hope it continues another 20 years or so. Life is short. Why not do what you enjoy? If I could make twice as much doing something else: I would still clean carpet. (maybe I would do both, Hah....at my age?)

Yes, I want to grow out of the one man show sooner than later. I'm not
in the best place to set hard plans, but I'll certainly set goals.
Thanks.
On the issue of education, well . . . it does open those doors,
somewhat. People with formal education--the social certificate, as it
were--have more freedom to choose their path. But dreams, big dreams .
. . it depends on the dream. For some, education is part of the means
to that end. It wasn't really like that for me. I just really need to
challenge my mind, and I also needed a comfy waystation. In retrospect,
as a means to an end, I really wish I studied marketing. Dammit.
Mr. Steamer, I won't argue.
