Just a quick question from a newbie to all of you bonnet (OP) cleaners. How much Horse power is too much? It seems like anything over 1hp could possibly distort the fibers, but i've read in some places that you want a minumum of 1.5 hp so that the motors won't burn out. Also, when you searching for buffers that oscilate, the selection seems slim with Oreck being the primary brand and they "look like" one puny buffer |

Take a look at the H-Ruby OP Machine. It is on our website as The Activator and has been upgraded in looks and also to a 1 1/2 HP motor.

HP has little to do with it Eaglemania, oscillation and WEIGHT is all that matters. No need for more than 1/2 to 3/4 on the new machine, wasted energy, it only takes more energy when you add more oscillation, but with the standard, 1 1/2 is WAY overpowered and unusable. Oreck "made" a larger one but it was not satisfactory and they quit making it, slow oscillation, plus a lot of motor shaft problems.
We have a ZERO burn out rate on our industrial motors, 3/4 hp for the High speed 17" Commercial breeze and 17" Brute, 1 hp for the 20" brute.
The idea of putting larger motors onto standard orbit oscillators is just a waste of money and adds too much weight.
Now, I am in NO WAY saying the new Hrubys are not a fine machine, but just laying out a few of the falacies that have been industry driven concerning OP machines. WE have been doing this for 33 years, and the competitors STILL can't figure out what we are doing. ------------- Converting HWE customer to VLM customers for 30 Years! |

I have no experience with op, so I'll only refer to standard buffers. I have several years experience on Matadors and about a year on a Hawk. I used a single speed Matador (175 rpm), which I believe was 1.5hp. My current Hawk buffer is 1.5hp as well, although it's dual speed (175/300). I also have lots of experience with the RX-20, both extraction and bonneting. It has 3/4hp and turns at 135rpm, if memory serves. I've never had a complaint about distorted fibers on any of these machines. Bear in mind, horsepower isn't the direct issue--rpm is the issue. A beefier machine that turns faster will clean better. It also increases your risk of mishap. If you catch a jagged corner or something with a 1.5hp machine, you're in for some trouble, because there's no way in hell you're strong enough to fight the machine--quick reflexes that help you turn the machine off very quickly will help you avoid potential headaches. If you go over dry carpet with a dry pad, you risk damaging the fibers, and a higher hp machine will continue to turn when a lower hp machine might lock up. In the case of olefin, you could burn the fibers. |

With OP, the higher the oscillation, the faster the cleaning, however the difference in the orbit makes it easier on carpet fibers.
