you are going to need equipment obviously, and we all know equipment is expensive! 'SCORE' is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide 'SCORE' is a resource partner with the U.S. small business administration Smile

Starting out in hard-surface competing with the mop & bucket is most likely something you don't want to attempt. If you choose to specialize in grout, marble, concrete cleaning and polishing can be very profitable without excessive investments.

Everywhere you look there will be work waiting for you. Cleaning hard-surface with the proper equipment is easy. Getting work is hard or easy depending on your sales, marketing and demo ability.

Get yourself a used floor machine 17-20".Pad Cleaningwith pad driver to hold your strip pad.
Convenience stores to me are the easiest to book.
They have VCT hard floor.

We started marketing to hotels and fast food companies and the work started to pile in. Another good tip is to join BOMA "Building Operators and Managers Association" or the US equal.

Good Luck

Which hard surfaces?  You can go crazy with equipment.

Bare minimum for hard surface work:

17" 175 with pad driver and T&G brush (I want a tank on my 175, but, many don't)
mop and mop bucket (don't buy some cheap crap, buy a good mop bucket).  one regular head and one finish head.
4" scrapper
doodle bug (small edging pad holder) and pole.
24" dust mop
wet/dry vac.
grout/corner brush on pole

Short of doing a complete resurfacing of hardwood or stone this allows you to "everything" associated with hardsurface care short of burnishing VCT.

It won't exactly be fun and fast, but, you can clean all of it with that basic setup.
