Can someone tell me if spotting using micro fiber wipes will damage the surface of carpet fibers?

You might want to ask a janitorial service company.  I can't imagine a professional carpet cleaner using them for anything short of cleaning the kitchen.

I would stick to the terry towels... Microfiber to me is not all that absorbent.

Microfiber is extremely absorbent even though its made of polyester or polyamide.
Microfiber holds seven times its weight in water and cleans down to microscopic levels.
We have changed all our cloths and mops to microfiber because of our new certified green sustainability contractor status. I am really surprised at the difference it has made.
That being said the microfiber are harder to buff down problem cellulosic furniture with.
Spotting is still supposed to be about blotting so the microfiber should not damage the fibers.
