A spot is an opportunity to make money. A stain is what was thought to be a spot but couldn't be removed.

spot belongs to the homeowner the hole belongs to the cleaner? If spot is lighter than the colour of the carpet. time for the knife or dyeing. If darker time to put a mat over it??

No question for me about it.  Varnish type stains that come off of furniture legs.  The brown or reddish brown are the worst.  presprays dont work. General spotters dont do much on them.  I have had success to a limited degree with certain ink removers on them.
