Hey there guys....

Just finished me first IICRC class and wow! I didn't know so much goes into carpet cleaning. I took the class while making up my mind about the business. I was the only person in there who has never cleaned a carpet "professionally". The class was OVER sold leaving very little time for hands on work. We basically studied for the test and that was it!

I did however meet a couple of guys (operator/owners) who; by there own standards; make pretty good money (six figs+)

About 40% of the class use portables while the others used the all powerful TM's.

HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS carry IICRC CERTS?

I was cleaning carpets also before I took the class, it was useful information, but not a hands on class, more informative on types of carpet and to tell what kind of carpet it is etc.....I renewed ny card for a few years and just thought what for.. most customers don't know what IICRC is. Congratulation on taking the class..

As mentioned on this forum before...

We are the only professional industry who go out on a trial and error basis and practice on hundreds of thousands of dollars of customers carpets then go to school ten years later to learn how we should do it properly.

By that time we have developed pre-conceived ideas and our own set of rules and we disagree with the experts who are doing the up-to-date training.

No comment, but I do remember back in the early 70's when everything we did was trial and error, the key was to learn from your mistakes, and that kind of knowledge sticks with you for ever, more so than anything taught in a classroom.

I was just taking the class because I was on the fence about getting into this line of work. I learned alot but most of the info I was looking for came from the op/owners who happend to be in the class with me.

I am now looking for a van to get started with....looking for a smaller veh around the size of an Astro. This would allow me to go portable (like I had planned) or to step up to a small TM.

This site has be very helpful to me and I thank you guys for assisting me with this project.

We are also Human....the same humans that have children & learn by trial & error to bring them up with no prior training,............. we are also the same humans that get married to a completely opposite sex with no knowledge of what is to be, ........we even purchase cats and dogs with no reasonable thoughts given other than they look cute as a puppy or kitten.......SO WHY NOT CLEAN PEOPLES CARPETS WITHOUT ANY REAL KNOWLEDGE OR TRAINING.........WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE

It's just my opinion but I was thinking the same thing when looking for a van and I got a full size van good thing I did , you have more room in the ful size van and when you start adding things you might need like chemicals towels vacuum etc.. you will wish you had more room, and if you do get a full size van ,you  don't have to look again when your ready for the TM.

Dennis.... Respectfully speaking..... it’s not rocket science!

I took the class as a tool to assist me with the decision to enter the business or not. I have also volunteered my time to TWO companies (owner/operators) as a way to learn the extras.

I would think that "professionals" in the business would be pleased that a new operator had taken these steps.

Otherwise….thanks for the info guys…I have decided you are right. I will find a full size van and go from there.

At least a certified cleaner knows not to strip the Stainmaster out of a Stainmaster.
At least a certified cleaner knows how to clean an olefin carpet without getting wickback.
At least a certified cleaner knows how to pick up the right spotter.
