The carpet and rug institute cleaned a wool carpet with a pre-spray of 11.8 ph and did another with a pre-spray of 8 ph. The pre-spray of 11.8 did not damage the carpet but the 8 did why you may ask. They used an acid rinse with both but the pre-spray of an 8 ph had a lot of buffers in it and 11.8 did not. What they are saying now is that it not so much at what ph your pre-spray is that matters but it is what ph you leave the carpet after you are done. If your pre-spray has a lot buffers in it it keeps it at a higher level if not and you use an acid rinse you will leave it at a lower level. You want to leave the carpet if it is wool at about a 5.5 ph.

Fibro: it was certainly good of you to pass this information on. One also has to consider the previous cleanings before you clean. the cleaner before you may have used a higher ph and nothing may happen till you activate previous residue. Sometimes it is not what you do that causes problems regarding this it may be the previous cleaner. It is still best to clean with the mildest solution possible to achieve the best results possible. I believe that subject is covered in the Woolsafe seminars.
