One thing I would add for anyone starting a carpet cleaning business today is not to get too caught up in buying the biggest or most expensive equipment right away.

Your first machine needs to be reliable, serviceable, and capable of doing the type of work you intend to pursue. A good professional portable extractor, quality wand, proper vacuum and solution hoses, upholstery tool, spotting kit and a sensible chemical inventory can handle a surprising amount of residential and commercial work.

Just as important is learning the actual cleaning process. Pre-vacuuming, proper preconditioning, agitation when required, correct chemistry, dwell time, controlled solution application and thorough recovery will usually make a bigger difference to the finished job than simply having more PSI.

Keep your overhead manageable in the beginning. You can always upgrade equipment once the workload and revenue justify it. Buying thousands of dollars worth of equipment before you have customers is backwards.

Pricing is another area where beginners get themselves into trouble. Know what each job actually costs you, including travel time, chemicals, equipment wear, insurance, advertising and your own labour. Being the cheapest cleaner in town is very easy. Staying profitable while doing good work is considerably harder.

And finally, don’t try to offer every possible service on day one. Become very good at the core services first, build a customer base and reputation, and then add upholstery, tile and grout, commercial maintenance, odour treatment and other specialty work as your experience grows.

Good equipment matters, but knowledge, consistency and running the numbers properly are what keep a carpet cleaning business alive.

Best Regards,
