Just another competitor, always thought that I should spend all my energy worrying about my own business rather than the competition, lots of dirty carpets out there to be cleaned

Steamer thats why they don't brag about their cleaning. They brag about their dry times. What do people feel is more important?? Clean Carpets or Dry Carpets?? The power of missleading advertising??

Chem-Dry is a very effective cleaning system if it's done right. When I worked for them, my boss didn't allow us to do it right. We only had the basic cleaner on hand but none of the specialty products. At the time, he had no truckmounts, but he does now, although I'm sure he still cuts "The Natural" with Oxyclean. Their tm's are good, they use an RX-20 with it, and the cleaner works great. If it doesn't work, that's the fault of the tech, not the system.

Most Carpet Cleaners only Clean and Wonder why they only Make a Living.
Chem Dry, market and make a good living and have an abundance left over. They built that company on the word DRY. Dry is a very positive word. Wet is a very negative word. Chem Dry simply capitalize on it.
Most steam cleaners knock them yet they keep growing and growing. I am sure Home Depot purchased them because they saw the large potential.
A few wet cleaners have seen the light and now offer a low moisture dry system OP (Cotton Pad Cleaning) at a higher price and are surprised how many customers want it over wet extraction.
Both systems will satisfy your customers needs and the one that cost you the least makes you the higher profit. "Strange But True" Compare your pricing to Chem Dry and you have your answer.

Well I just sat down with one of the Franchise mgr's @ Chem Dry it is not a cheap Franchise to own. Your looking @ $220 per month per territory. ( You will need at least 3 to earn a good living) $3000 per year in their cleaning solutions per territory. Plus you have to buy their truckmount & their Rx 20. Basicly what I got from him & I called another Franchise owner if you have a good unfranchised Carpet Cleaning business going then dont join a franchise.

Here is San Diego, Stanely Steemer is synonymous with "carpet cleaning." Chem-Dry is synonymous here with "dry carpet cleaning" or "bonnet cleaning." That's a real feat, making your brand the preferred shorthand for a given product/service type.

Those were all major factors in my decision to not buy into the Chem-Dry franchise, which was my original plan. Also, when you have a bunch of Chem-Dry franchises in one area, they're pretty much forced to keep their prices right around the other ones. Who wants to use the most expensive Chem-Dry? Customers will just think all Chem-Dry services are the same and then choose the cheapest one.

I guess so. I really don't know how many Chem-Dry franchises in San Diego have opened and then folded. I don't know what reasons the failed Chem-Dry owners would claim made them close up. I just know that from my own experience as an employee for a franchise that the pricing of other Chem-Dry businesses was definitely an issue, and it remained an issue for me when I was deciding whether or not to open a Chem-Dry myself. Aside from the start-up costs, the main reason I was turned off, though, was the territory restrictions. Anyway, I'm really glad I didn't go that route.

Hey Ninja.....Just registerd for thenext IIcrc class in my area. I have also talked with an independent op/owner in my area who answered a number of questions for me.
I'm trying to deal with the question, "What portable" to buy. I have read and re-read lots of info on many units from the Ninja (which I assume you run), The Recoil 3 and a few others.
Thanks again for the reply

You may feel I am 'Pro' ChemDry and I am not, but I do business with many classes of carpet cleaners and see their individual lifestyles. Many ChemDry are front-runners. They are business and marketing people cleaning carpets and not carpet cleaners cleaning carpets. They have been taught to maximize profits. Most run a good operation and I know of many steam cleaners who clean up after the mess they have left and I know ChemDry people who have cleaned up after the mess that steam cleaners have left.
The last ChemDry that I spoke with told me he would never clean carpets for his new boss Home Depot at their pricing as his is two to three times higher. Let it be known that I am not promoting ChemDry but do believe in the OP System as a secondary option and always at higher prices and profit (Dry Clean). It is alive and well.
Now, after saying that...most of you should be aware that most ChemDry people have been forced by head office to use high energy portables and also truckmounts with RX-20 attachments. It would be a challenge to beat the quality that their new systems offer. If a guy can hang on to an RX-20 or Rotovac he is always assured the best of quality with minimal effort.
Long message - short answer:
Marketing and good equipment plus a smiling operator who shows up on time.

Well all I got to say about this is "Most of the Major Carpet Makers recommend the Hot water soil extraction method to maintain the warranty of the carpet"
That said you can not convince me that anything other than a good Tm, a Good Tech and Great cleaning products will ever be out done by any soda water or bonnets to get really heavily soiled carpets clean.

Find a supplier who will allow you to demo an oscillating unit using 100% pure Cotton Pads. Not synthetic bonnets and you will be convinced.
