Defoamer should be used as an insurance policy. Just in case foam gets into the system without your knowledge  it can damage and shorten the life of vacuum motors.

Adding defoamer when you see foam is like closing the barn door after the horse gets out. Even if you use foamless products you still have to worry about what the last guy left behind.

P.S.
Remember whatever you add to your vac tank mists and comes out the exhaust in odor-form. Fleece also works but as said before don't use domestic products. They hired you because you know what they don't.

you don't have to fill your tank with the stuff... just a light spray in the waste tank enterance... or the hose ends... or just around the top of the tank...

Also salt and vinegar works but not as good....
